NACO ORPHANAGE

Donate to the Duras's major cause is to aid the Home of Refuge Internacional orphanage located in Naco Santa Barbara, Honduras. There are currently around 30 orphans at the orphanage. The ages of the orphans range from 2 years old all the way up to 18.

2024 January Project Summary
This year we gave toys and clothes to all the children in the orphanage. We provided clothes, gifts, and food to 30 orphans via our donations. Additionally, we used funds to repair doors and windows in the living quarters. Click here to view our photo gallery.

Thank you again to Jim Kielbaso, John Dalson, Jake Dalson, and the entire Impact Sports Performance team for holding another toy drive supporting our cause this year!

During our visit, we learned that Home of Refuge Internacional has 110 chickens that produce over 100 eggs a day. These eggs provide the children with a good source of protein, and Pastor Frederico has been selling the excess eggs in cartons of 30 for 110 limpiras (about $4.50) to make some extra money to run the orphanage. The demand for his eggs have been so great that he has ordered 140 more chickens to produce more eggs for his business.

2022 Project Summary
Because of the positive feedback from Pastor Federico about our 2021 project (description further below), we decided to construct another chicken coop to provide space for more chickens, which have given the children key nutrients and protein. Although we considered building a pig stye, we found it more economically and nutritionally beneficial for the children and orphanage to build another chicken coop. It is much easier to take care of chickens, and they provide larger quantities of protein with each chicken laying an egg per day for at least a few months. This egg production presented an opportunity to provide economic sustainability to the orphanage by selling the excess eggs to local markets.

On top of the chicken coop addition, we gave 3 toys and a pair of shoes to each of the 26 children at the orphanage this year. Like in years past, we collected monetary donations through our GoFundMe and donations through our "giving tree" process.

Due to the generosity of Coach Fazio and the Detroit Country Day Swim Team, there was a swim meet in the fall of 2022 to raise funds for the orphanage. All ticket sales were donated to Donate to the Duras and our 2022 project! With this new opportunity, we raised nearly $1500, which helped fund the chicken coop, chickens, and gifts for the children. Thank you to Coach Fazio and all those who participated in helping our cause!

Jake Dalson, John Dalson, and Impact Sports Performance, a local sports training company based in Novi, Michigan, also administered a toy drive this year, providing so many toys that each kid received 3 of them! Their support aided the Honduran community and our project tremendously!

2021 Project Summary

During the 2021 holiday season, our goal was to provide a new chicken coop for the orphans. Unfortunately, the orphanage's chicken coop was destroyed during the devastating Hurricane Eta last year. Through a company based in Naco Santa Barbara, we gathered the material to create the chicken coop. This company then built the chicken coop. This construction was paid for through our generous donations! Additionally, we gave 50 chickens to live in the coop, which provide essential protein for the children. We also supplied shoes, clothes, food, and gifts to the orphans for their Christmas celebration! Please visit our photo gallery to see what YOUR donations have helped us accomplish. As always, the GoFundMe is available on our HOME page. It was great to be able to return to the orphanage in 2021 in-person!

We have received very positive feedback from the orphanage about the chicken coop that we constructed during this project. The chickens and their eggs are providing the children with key nutrients and protein. Along with improving their physical health, the chickens are producing leftover eggs that are being sold to local companies and creating profit for the orphanage.

2020 Project Summary

2020 brought many challenges to these kids including COVID-19 and Hurricane Eta hitting Honduras during the end of October and the start of November. To read up on the impact of Hurricane Eta, please see our HURRICANE ETA page.

During December of 2020, we sent down items to help with hurricane relief from the devastating Hurricane Eta. We also brought these kids a Christmas by providing gifts with your kind donations. You all were able to sponsor an orphan which entailed buying clothes and toys for a child.
If you would like to give a monetary donation, please see our GoFundMe account to do so as we are always open to donations. The Home of Refuge Internacional needs our help more than ever due to the Honduran government’s budget cuts caused by the costs of disaster relief for the country. Honduras will be recovering from this disaster for years, so this is still a very current issue. Please consider lending a helping hand during this time of struggle and hardship to improve their lives.

During December of 2020, we were able to meet our goal of $1,000 through our GoFundMe to put towards the orphanage. 100% of the money raised was used to purchase clothes, food, toys, and other items for the orphans.

Due to COVID-19, we were not able to make the trip down to Honduras for our December 2020 mission in person. Although there were several obstacles that we had to overcome, our mission was completed with much help from our friend Donald, who lives in Honduras. We were able to ship the presents down and deliver the presents during the holiday season!

2019 Project Summary
In December of 2019, we raised money to give the orphanage clothes, food, and Christmas gifts. We threw a party with clowns, dancing, and more! Thank you again for all of YOUR generous donations. We can't thank you enough and hope to complete even more next year!

2018 Project Summary
Our 2018 project was our first time bringing donations to the orphanage. We brought lightly used clothes and foods (like beans, rice, and vegetables) to the orphanage. Our first project was a success, and we appreciate all of the support! We are excited to continue this work next year!

YOUTH SOCCER TEAM

In addition to the Naco Orphanage program, Donate to the Duras has aided Mr. Mayorga's, a youth soccer team in San Pedro Sula. We were able collect donations of equipment like shin guards and cleats. Clark and Graham Doman have played soccer many times with the team while they have traveled to Honduras.
